The Heavy Mikado locomotive design was produced under the control of the United States Railroad Administration (USRA), the nationalised USA railroad system, during World War 1. A total of 233 were built with a 2-8-2 wheel arrangement and post-war it became the de-facto standard design - a total of 957 were eventually built including the USRA-built originals and subsequent copies. The Heavy Mikados used the same running gear as the earlier Light Mikado design but were built to a higher axle load, had larger cylinders and a much larger boiler - which provided more power and steam generating ability. |
