In 1897, two 4-4-4 tank engines with 5 ft 3 in (1,600 mm) driving wheels were purchased from Sharp, Stewart and Company for the Midland & South Western Junction Railway, an independent railway which ran North to South connecting Midland Railway and LSWR lines. They proved to be useful on stopping passenger trains; they were numbered 17 and 18. These two locomotives passed into GWR use but were withdrawn prior to nationalisation. |
