The GUV (or General Utility Van) was produced in large numbers by British Rail in the late 1950s, primarily for transporting mail and parcels. In the early 1990s, several GUV vans were converted into ‘Super GUVs’ - being fitted with roller shutter doors, new flooring and a segregated shunters compartment. These days, the Super GUVs see occasional use with Network Rail as part of breakdown trains and are no longer used for postal traffic.
