A total of 69 Class 27 locomotives were produced by Birmingham RCW Co. between 1961 and 1962. Essentially a more powerful version of the Class 26, with a 1,250hp engine - the class was initially distributed across the Midland, North Eastern and Scottish regions. From the mid-1960s they were entirely concentrated in Scotland where they continued in both passenger and freight operations until 1987.
