The Anglian Train Set R8089 | | User Rating: 6/10 Review this product New | Read Reviews
R8089 The Anglian Train Set. For many people in the rural areas of East Anglia, the only way to get to the main towns and cities in the eastern counties of England was by train. There were several types of passenger train that served the Eastern corner of England, including small passenger trains usually pulled by a six wheeled locomotive of the larger variety that were hauled by the prestigious locomotives of the line. Quite often these trains were given their own name to reflect the area that they covered. This set was inspired by the rich period of passenger travel in the early 1950s when the steam train was a vital link to the outside world for those who lived in these rural areas. Produced for Argos Stores.

A superb set for the Eastern Region fan. The only thing I found was the main drive gear was faulty and the loco was underpowered with a tiny can motor doing the job of the famous old powerful X.04 motor. Fortunately I had an old Tri-ang chassis with X.04 motor and syncrosmoke smoke unit sitting about so I removed the Hornby chassis, removed the smokebox door to remove the massive weight Hornby fitted to the body and removed the two weights either side behind the cab steps, drilled the chinmey out and fitted the Tri-ang chassis to the loco. It now runs superbly with plenty of power and has smoke! The coaches are the former Tri-ang clerestories and my examples where nice painted although the paint was a bit thick in places hiding some of the detailing. All in all a nice set with some blemishes.

I bought this set from Argos in 2007 Christmas. It is a wonderful train to run and the carriages are also good looking. However, the carriages are very poor in heaviness and can easily de- rail. Recently, I was running my loco around the layout, and suddenly it stopped, and it was just pulling the carriages that came with it. After further inspection, I found out that the motor cog had worn out, and I was very disappointed is I had hardly ran it and it was only 2 years old.
I took it to a local Model Shop, who had contacted Hornby about it. Hornby had replied back saying along the lines of this: There is a fault with this product, and we and Argos both know about this. The motor cog isn't very good and we know that this particular model doesn't last very long. However, we will be selling replacements in September.
I was very disappointed in not only Argos, but Hornby as well. So, when buying this, leave it alone until September. If you see it on the market for a very cheap price you know it is a faulty one that Argos has sold. Wait until September to get a new one that will (hopefully) be better! Be Warned!

I purchased this set in 2007, after seeing the picture in the Argos catalogue, I bought it mainly for the Engine (B12 in express blue) and I am quite happy with the finish of the engine. The two coaches are beginning to show their age now, and the paint finish on my two is very heavy, and it obliterates some of the details on the coach sides.
I do not how well the loco performs as I haven't run it since I bought it.
