Seeing Double at Beamish

30th September 2008

Two versions of a famous railway locomotive came together on Sunday 28th September when Beamish Museums Curator of Transport Paul Jarman was presented with an 0 Scale pewter model of Locomotion No.1 in front of the full-size working replica by David Williams on behalf of model-manufacturer Bachmann Europe.

The pewter model celebrates the 175th anniversary of Bachmann, now a leading model railway manufacturer, which has its origins in America in 1833.

Beamish North of England Open Air Museum is home to the working replica of Locomotion No.1 which had its first public steaming at Beamish back in 1975, 150 years after the original locomotive, designed by George Stephenson, was unveiled on the Stockton and Darlington Railway. The replica has been a popular attraction on the Museums Pockerley Waggonway ever since, and has subsequently been joined by two further replica locomotives featuring designs from the pioneering days of steam, Puffing Billy and the Steam Elephant.

The presentation took place during the Museums Autumn Steam Gala, which saw two visiting locomotives visit the site, Furness Railway No.20 of 1863 and Haydock Foundry tank locomotive Bellerophon of 1874 vintage.

Speaking at the handover, Paul Jarman of Beamish said, Our working replica of Locomotion No.1 has been a great crowd-puller, in every sense, since 1975 and its great to have one of these commemorative models in our collection.

Those who would like to own their own version of the 0 Scale Locomotion No.1 should enquire at their local model railway retailer or visit www.bachmann.co.uk for more information
