Don't be fooled by an earlier review, this is a model, hence it needs a minimum radius equivalent to No 2 curves (whatever they are). I believe that it is not intended as a toy or to run on train set curves. If. you want to run around tight curves, you can always change the pony truck wheelset for the flangeless variety provided
These too are one of my favourite classes (along with anything from Mr Gresley or Mr Peppercorn). My father built a 3.5in gauge model of this very engine and, as a 13yr old I rode on the footplate of 49 around the Grantham triangle. In preparation for building his A3, my father had a shed pass for Grantham and was able to take lots of pictures of this and other members of the class. I was bought up on a diet of Eastern Region steam.
With that background, I can agree whole heartedly with Paul Caswell. That's why I own two (well, one will become another Grantham A3) ! I already owned several other Hornby models of A3s and was suitably impressed, so when 60049 was announced, I had no hesitation in ordering two. Whilst running my eye over the model (with an eyeglass !) I noted that the 'cast' tender number plate was for a another tender, but try noticing when she runs past at 70mph.
In times past, provided a model had the right number of wheels and was approximately the right colour, we thought it was great. I'm not comparing Hornby's Galtee More with those things, I'm comparing the model with the real thing. There is nothing to criticise this model for; it's as good as it gets

As a lover of the LNER Pacifics for almost all my (not so short) life, I have waited for years of a decent model of a 'final condition' A3. What a choice of prototype: No49, the first of the class to receive the Germanic smoke deflectors. This is simply the finest RTR locomotive I have ever seen (apart from the 'OO' gauge problem). From any angle this loco is not a model: it's as if one were a giant looking at the genuine article. Hornby have made not just an accurate model, but one that (and this is not so easy) has the aura and character of the A3. As an example of the accuracy, take a look at the smokebox number plate: Doncaster cast several of these with erroneously curved 6s and 9s, and even this is replicated in the model. Wonderful stuff, and very much recommended.

Runs quite smoothly, quiet, requires radius 2 curves minimum. Paintwork and detail is up to standard. To enhance the model further you can fit a detail kit and put real coal in tender with some light weathering it will become a great lifelike model.
